As we continue in these modern times, our lives get busier and busier, and we start searching for conveniences and down-time as much as possible to make up for the hard work we put in to everyday, so What Does The Bible Say About Living Healthy?
Because of this, many of us lose sight of our health and the state of our bodies. This can be one of the most difficult improvements a person can make in their lives, as well as one that takes the sheerest determination.
There is a reason why the weight loss, diet, and exercise industries make billions of dollars per year, as every person is searching for that “miracle” diet, that fail-proof exercise regimen, and that magic way to get their bodies back in shape. A lack of motivation and a lack of accountability are the two biggest factors contributing to those losing sight of their health goals, but what if we told you that all the motivation and accountability you need is right there in God’s word?
Knowing that God is watching over you always, and he provided his own “care instructions” for how we should take care of our bodies, provides the accountability you may need to stick with your goals and work hard to a place of health once again. When you have an extra cheat day, God is watching, when you take off from the gym early, God is watching, and when you decide it’s just not worth working towards anymore, God is watching then, as well. Even if you don’t have a workout buddy to hold you accountable, you can view God as your own personal training coach who knows just how hard you’re really working.
Not only does God provide accountability, but he provides motivation as well. Being held constantly accountable without motivation can seem lacking in empathy and understanding, but God of course lacks in neither of these, and he has laid out tons of excellent motivation in the pages of the Bible to gently and reassuringly push you towards a better self.
One such motivating passage can be found in Corinthians 6:19-20, wherein it states “Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.” What this passage is saying is that your body isn’t just your body, your body is also God’s body, so when you hurt your body you’re simultaneously hurting God as well. God wants us to glorify our bodies, to make them the best and healthiest they can be, so that they can accurately reflect the piece of Him that is in all of us.
The next time you’re thinking of taking an off-day from the gym, or you’re considering a few cheat days in a row, think about God and how he’s there wanting you to succeed!
